TABE Level A Overview

Level A is the highest of the TABE 13&14’s levels, sitting at the top of the difficulty scale. The “A” stands for “Advanced,” and reaching it through your Locator results is a real accomplishment — it means your skills in reading, math, and language are strong enough to be measured against the most demanding material the TABE offers. For many learners, testing at Level A signals readiness to move toward a high school equivalency credential like the GED or HiSET, or into college and career training programs.

Like the other levels, Level A is delivered as three separate subject tests, and you’ll take whichever ones your program requires. The Reading test has 40 questions across two 50-minute parts. Mathematics holds at 40 questions, with a 45-minute section followed by a 15-minute one. Language stays at 33 questions in a single 50-minute window. The questions are mostly multiple choice and can be taken on a computer or on paper, though some testing centers offer the most advanced material online only.

The skill categories at Level A share the same names you’d see at any level, but the demands within them are at their peak. Reading passages call for careful analysis of complex texts and the ideas connecting them. The math works through algebra, geometry, and data interpretation at a level that approaches high school standards. Language questions test a refined command of grammar, structure, and vocabulary. It’s the same framework as the lower levels, set to its highest standard.

Even at the top level, the TABE remains a measuring tool rather than a pass-or-fail exam. Your score captures where your skills stand and helps confirm your readiness for what comes next, whether that’s an equivalency exam, further education, or a career path. Many learners arrive at Level A after steadily climbing from earlier levels, and a strong showing here is often the green light to take that next step.

Preparing for Level A rewards focus and realism. Practice with timed questions in your subjects, read closely since the advanced wording can carry subtle distinctions, and treat each practice session like the real thing. Walking in already comfortable with the pace lets you give your full attention to the questions in front of you.
